Planning your modular kitchen: a checklist for Kathmandu homeowners

A kitchen remodel is one of the biggest investments in any home, here is how to plan yours without regret.

A kitchen renovation is exciting and stressful in equal measure. The decisions you make before a single unit is built will determine whether your new kitchen feels generous and functional in five years, or cramped and dated. We have built enough kitchens across Kathmandu to know which choices clients are glad they made, and which they wish they could take back.

Before you meet a carpenter

  • Map your workflow: Think about the triangle between your fridge, hob, and sink. These three points should be close to each other and free of obstructions.
  • Count your appliances: List every appliance you own or intend to buy, microwave, oven, dishwasher, water purifier, chimney. Each needs a home in the design.
  • Think about light: Natural light matters enormously in a kitchen. Where are the windows? Will upper cabinets block them? Consider open shelving above the counter on the light side.
  • Decide on finishes early: Solid wood shutters age beautifully but need more maintenance than lacquer. Matte finishes hide fingerprints better than gloss. Stone countertops are heavy, make sure your carcasses can take the weight.
  • Budget a contingency: Civil work (waterproofing, tile, plumbing) almost always throws a surprise. Keep 10–15% in reserve.
